For most of the year, it’s known for its warm climate, white sand beaches, and cultural activities.

But at Christmas, the city gains a reputation for being a winter wonderland with all the hallmarks of the season.

It’s the ideal place to visit for those who want to see an authentic Christmas market without straying too far from home.

And it’s perfect for people who don’t like the cold, as San Sebastian enjoys warmer temperatures than many European cities in winter.

Visitors should keep in mind when packing that the city sees highs of up to 13C in December, with lows of 7C at night.

The main attraction of the city in winter is undoubtedly the Christmas markets, which open on November 29.

The festivities began with a ceremonial turning on of the lights, and the whole city is set to glow right through until January.

San Sebastian is dotted with multiple markets so holidaygoers are spoiled for choice.

Punters can visit the main instalment beside the Urumea River, which is the ideal way to experience an authentic Christmas market.

Try the area’s locally produced goods to get a real sense of everyday life in the city.

San Sebastian’s Christmas markets is complete with plenty of activities that are great for families and people of all ages.

A huge ferris wheel is set up in the town square and decked out with festive lights to add to the charm.

And there’s a “snow in the city” event featuring faux snow which children are sure to love.

There’s also performances by a gospel choir and carol singers in the weeks leading up to the big day.

And the city places a huge focus on helping people and giving back, so there are charity events such as dinners and a second hand toy drive.

Beyond the markets, the city has plenty on offer.

San Sebastian has a stunning old town where history lovers are sure to find plenty to admire.

Take a stroll through the cobbled streets and take in the stunning architecture.

Or, visit the Plaza de la Constitucion, a beautiful town square dotted with restaurants and bars.

It’s the ideal place for dinner or a drink after a day at the markets.

Culture lovers should also be sure to visit the San Telmo museum, a 16th century building with stunning architecture.

Located in the Old Town, the former convent offers a glimpse into the city’s fascinating history.

Another must do in the city is a visit to Mount Igeldo, a stunning hilltop that overlooks the bay and the city.

The best way to experience the mountain is to take the 100-year-old Igeldo funicular railway.

The retro train carriages carry visitors from the base of the mountain up to the summit, where there is a huge playground.

And there’s a stunning lookout point where you can the most Instagram-perfect shots.

To top off a day on the mountain, punters can book a table at the Torren Tower restaurant and enjoy a meal while watching the sunset over the bay.

Another must see spot in the city is the “romantic area”, nestled between La Concha beach and Mount Urgull.

The spot is the perfect place for couples to take a stroll together but it can be enjoyed by solo travellers and families as well.

It’s home to stunning buildings such as the Maria Cristina Hotel and Victoria Eugenia theatre.

And in nearby Gipuzkoa Square there is a stunning French garden which boasts beautiful nature even in the winter.
