Over €170,000 in State funding has been awarded to ten sports clubs and organisations across county Longford.

Ten sports clubs and organisations across county Longford have been awarded over €170,000 in State funding.

The six figure sum was awarded as part of the Government’s latest round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (‘SCEP’).

The monies have been allocated to allow for the purchasing of vital day to day equipment.

Longford Phoenix Basketball Club topped the ten strong list, courtesy of a €46,135 grant with Longford Gymnastics Club (€32, 964) and Cnoc Mhuire, Granard (€26, 515) making up the top three list of successful recipients.

News of the funding allocations have been warmly received at local political level.

Longford-Westmeath Fianna Fáil TD Joe Flaherty singled out the financial boost which was set to come the way of Longford Phoenix Basketball Club, an organisation the Lanesboro native said was buoyed by its hard working committee.

Mr Flaherty also alluded to how he remained confident of further, potentially even more exciting news coming the way of the county next month by way of a “major sports capital” announcement.

Longford Fine Gael Senator Micheál Carrigy followed suit as he paid tribute to all of the locally based volunteers who applied for funding on behalf of their respective clubs.

“Congratulations to the committees on securing this funding this is fantastic news and a testament to their hard work and dedication,” he said.

“These committees are voluntary and I understand the effort and commitment required in submitting these application.”
