Chennai Peripheral Ring road: Once the project is completed, the expressway will connect the cities of Singaperumalkoil, Sriperumbudur, Tiruvallur, Thamaraipakkam, Periyapalayam, Puduvayal, and Kattupally, significantly reducing travel time and promoting regional development.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu State Highway Department is constructing the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road, a 132.87 km, 10-lane expressway connecting Mamallapuram to Kattupally port, in an effort to ease traffic congestion in the city. The project, estimated to cost Rs 12,301 crore, will be completed in two phases. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has allocated Rs 2,673 crore to the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation for the project.

Once completed, the expressway will connect the cities of Singaperumalkoil, Sriperumbudur, Tiruvallur, Thamaraipakkam, Periyapalayam, Puduvayal, and Kattupally, significantly reducing travel time and promoting regional development. The 133-km Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) will have dedicated service lanes for two-wheelers, linking Ennore to Poonjeri.

Tamil Nadu’s Longest Expressway: Chennai Peripheral Ring Road Nears Completion

The Chennai Peripheral Ring Road will be the fourth ring road in Chennai and is expected to reduce air pollution in the city. Two-wheelers will only be allowed on service roads, not on the main road. Private port companies, including Ennore Kamarajar Port, Kattupalli Adani, and L&T, have urged the Tamil Nadu government to complete the project quickly.

The project’s design speed is 120 km/h, with six main lanes and two service lanes on both sides. The Ennore-Thachur section is currently under construction. The Chennai Peripheral Ring Road is expected to become Tamil Nadu’s first 10-lane road, marking a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development.

The project is slated for completion by 2025, with the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation overseeing its execution under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model.
