Canada players celebrating an Ireland wicket (x.com)

Canada held off an experienced Irish batting line-up to secure a 12-run win in match number 13 of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup at New York’s Nassau County International Stadium.

Here’s the timeline of how IRE vs CAN panned out in New York:

IRE vs CAN Highlights: Craig Young Shatters Canada Top-Order With Adair

Sharing the new-ball with Josh Little, right-arm fast bowler Mark Adair made early impact for Ireland by getting rid of Canada opener Navneet Dhaliwal in the third over of the match.

Brought into the attack as the first bowling change of the innings, senior Irish pacer Craig Young also chipped in with two wickets in his opening spell. For starters, the 34-year-old deceived Aaron Johnson before getting Canada number three Pargat Singh at 42-3.

IRE vs CAN Highlights: Kirton, Heyliger Lead Canada Recovery After Delany’s Breakthrough

Irish leg-spinner Gareth Delany further pounced on Canada’s top-order struggles by deceiving Dilpreet Bajwa with a sharp caught-and-bowled.

Staring down the barrel at 53-4 in 8.1 overs, middle-order batters Nicholas Kirton and Shreyas Movva led Canada’s recovery by sharing 75 runs together off the subsequent 10-and-a-half overs. While Kirton top-scored in the innings with a sizzling 35-ball 49, wicketkeeper-batter Movva formed a cautious 37 to add respectability to Canada’s total.

IRE vs CAN Highlights: McCarthy Takes Two As IRE Restrict Canada To 137-7

Against the run of play, Barry McCarthy banged in a sharp short delivery to get rid of well-set dangerman Nicholas Kirton in the penultimate over of the innings. The Irish speedster also removed Dilon Heyliger for a two-ball duck a couple of deliveries later in the same over to prevent Canada from flourishing at the death.

The Canadian team eventually reached 137-7 to conclude their innings.

IRE vs CAN Highlights: Experienced Irish Top-Order Crumble In Front Of Gordon, Siddiqui

Chasing 138 for a win, Ireland’s experienced top-order crumbled in front of Canada’s new-ball pacer Jeremy Gordon and also struggled to overcome spinners Junaid Siddiqui and Saan Bin Zafar.

Gordon removed Irish captain Paul Stirling within the opening powerplay while Siddiqui caught-and-bowled Andy Balbirnie. Dilon Heyliger accounted for the wickets of Curtis Campher and Gareth Delany as Ireland slipped to 59-6 in 12.3 overs.

IRE vs CAN Highlights: Canada Prevail With 12 Runs Despite Dockrell And Adair’s Irish Fightback

At 59-6, Ireland’s George Dockrell (30* off 23 balls) and Mark Adair (34 off 24 balls) staged a valiant 62-run partnership from seven overs to take their team past the 100-run mark.

However, Adair’s dismissal in the final over at the hands of Jeremy Gordon (2-16) helped Canada secure a thrilling 12-run win to register their opening Group A points of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
