A POPULAR Irish island with breathtaking views has job opportunities available for people looking to work this summer.

Spike Island in Cork is a popular summer destination and with a range of jobs available for summer 2024, you could be paid to enjoy the “unparalleled views”.

The island, located at the Cork Harbour and which was originally a monastic settlement, is home to the famous Fort Mitchel.

The popular tourist attraction is open for tours seven days a week from May through October.

Tours run to the island from the harbour and take three and a half hours, including the ferry journey.

Tickets for an adult are €26.95, while a child’s ticket is €13.95.

Family, student and senior tickets are also available.

The tour kickstarts by visiting the fort with an experienced tour guide which lasts for 40 minutes and then visitors will explore the island in their own time.

There’s two walking trails on the island; the Ring of Spike trail and the Glacis Walk, along with historical sites such as the School Master’s Quarters and the Chapel Yard.

The island also do a night tour suitable for ages 16+ where you’ll explore the corridors lit by candle light.

You’ll also visit what was once Ireland’s most notorious prison with spooky stories of the prisoners it once held.

There’s a range of amenities available on the island including a picnic area, a playground and cafe and a gift shop which they are now recruiting staff members for.

Positions available include retail staff and baristas along with tour guides and ticket office staff.

Job requirements

There are a few requirements for job seekers hoping to apply for one of the island’s seasonal roles.

The Spike Island website states the ideal candidate will have “excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be enthusiastic and have a flexible approach to working hours”.

A strong flare for customer service is also a must.

While experience is desirable it’s not required as full training will be provided to any successful candidates.
