Rory McIlroy recorded a sensational comeback victory to win the Wells Fargo Championship for the fourth time on Sunday. McIlroy has now won the title in the years 2010, 2015, 2021, and 2024. No other player has won the event more than twice.

Northern Irish golfer McIlroy won his fourth title on Sunday by beating long-standing leader Xander Schauffele.

The Holywood native was four shots behind his counterpart Schauffele after the first three days, but clawed the gap back to just one shot before Sunday evening.

McIlroy would then put on a masterful display on the North Carolina course back nine to win by five shots in the end. His final score recorded was -17 overall, with a final day score of -6.

Schauffele, who was the leader after each of the first three rounds and finally lost out to his colleague, congratulated Mcllroy for winning the event.

“He’s Rory McIlroy, you know?” Schauffele said. “He hits it 350 yards in the air downwind, and he has shorter clubs into firm greens than anyone else. When he’s on, he’s on. Hats off to him for winning.”

After a disappointing Masters in Augusta, this win is just the tonic McIlroy needed ahead of this week’s US PGA Championship, which takes place in Louisville, Kentucky, at Valhalla.

Coincidentally, McIlroy, who is currently on four majors and looking to win a record-breaking fifth, will head to the same venue as his last major win in 2014. McIlroy admits he’s in a good place ahead of the event next week.

McIlroy, speaking to Sky Sports, said, “I just went on a run that, for whatever reason, I’m able to go on at this golf course. Quail Hollow (and Charlotte in general) have been really good to me.

“Coming into this week, at a golf course I am comfortable with, my golf swing feels more comfortable than it has done.

“Going to a venue next week where I have won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit. But I have a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat.

“I am going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself.”
