Edmonton Oilers (Puck Line) EVEN

This time last month, the Oilers had a six-game win streak snapped by the Blue Jackets in Edmonton. Thankfully, I wasn’t interested in backing the Oilers (-400) back then, but now I’d argue that they’re playing their best hockey of the season and the current odds (-245) are short.

Edmonton’s offense has scored 4.25 goals per 60 minutes since Jan. 1^st (the next best team scored 3.8 goals per 60) and only one team has generated more shots on goal per 60 minutes over the last 20 games. Columbus, on the other hand, ranks as the worst offensive team in the league during that stretch (2.17 goals per 60).

The Blue Jackets are 3-3-1 since the All-Star break, but they’ve scored have only scored four goals in five of their last 23 games. They’ve seemed to improve defensively, having allowed three or fewer goals in eight of their last 10 games, but they still rank among the worst teams in the league in terms of the number of shots they give up per game. It’s not sustainable, and the Oilers are likely to bring their numbers back down to earth.

Edmonton ranks as a top-five team in expected goals this season, but only the Hurricanes have been better as of late. The Blue Jackets have virtually no home-ice advantage, and there’s a better than 50 percent chance that Edmonton will win the game by two goals or more.
