Douglas star Jack Murphy will take a four-shot lead into the final day of the Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup.

Murphy has carded back-to-back rounds of 69 to hit the front on six-under-par and he is chasing a wire-to-wire win.

The Irish international was level-par after nine holes with two birdies and two bogeys but a flawless back nine that saw him eagle the par-5 15th and birdie the par-3 16th helped him pull clear of the chasing pack.

“The course is in great condition considering the rain we got the weather is lovely and I can’t wait to get back out today,” Murphy said ahead of his third round.

His club mate James Walsh is his closest challenger alongside Andrew McCormack of Castletroy on two-under-par while Dundalk’s Caolan Rafferty is a shot further back and rounds off the players who are in red figures.

Rafferty had a top-10 here last year and followed up a morning 74 with a second round of 69 as he brushed off some rust after going away on honeymoon.

“All considering with how bad the weather has been the course is great. I got it going for a couple of holes with a few birdies in a row which was kind of nice. I am rusty after a couple of weeks off on honeymoon so the golf took a back seat.

“It’s a good challenge here, the greens are tricky if you get the wrong side it’s a three-putt. I know the lines better off the tee and we are blessed with the weather so if I can match my good round at the end of last year I’ll be happy.”
