When McDonald’s announced late last year that it would roll out generative artificial intelligence (AI) capability from 2024 at thousands of “drive-thru” locations in the United States, it became the latest chain to embrace the technology.

Already, rivals there have been experimenting with the use of AI-driven chatbots to handle order taking at drive-thru locations and it marks just another application of a technology that will bring significant societal opportunities, challenges and change.
