At a glance: 17.20 pm update

The first TD of the 34th Dáil is Fine Gael’s Jennifer Carroll MacNeill.

She topped the poll in Dun Laoghaire with more than 500 votes over the quota.

A second Fine Gael TD looks likely in Barry Ward, while Fianna Fáil’s Cormac Devlin and People Before Profit’s Richard Boyd Barrett should also be elected.

However Green Party junior minister Ossian Smyth will lose out.

Elsewhere, Labour look set to make a gain in the new constituency of Fingal West where Councillor Rob O’Donoghue should be elected.

But another Junior GP minister – Joe O’Brien – will lose his seat.

Sinn Fein’s Louise O’Reilly has topped the poll and will be elected, while Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are set to battle for the final seat, with FG ahead by 166 votes.

It is a similar story in Meath East where FF is slightly ahead of FG for the final seat in that three seater.

With many final tallies in, the results are becoming clearer.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are battling for final seats in several constituencies.

The Social Democrats are chasing several gains, including in Cork South Central.

And the Greens are facing near wipe out.

There’s good news for two former TDs set for comebacks – Timmy Dooley should top the poll in Clare while independent Kevin Boxer Moran is well placed to return in Longford Westmeath.

In the new three-seat Tipperary South, Independent Mattie McGrath looks as though he will top the poll, while Fine Gael will make a gain.

Fianna Fáil and Independent Seamus Healy are in contention for the final seat.

But Sinn Féin’s Martin Browne could lose out.

In Meath East, independent councillor Gillian Toole looks well-placed to win a Dáil seat for the first time.

Change is likely in Kildare South where Independent Cathal Berry looks to be in difficulty, while former Sinn Fein TD, now independent, Patricia Ryan is certain to lose out.

Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael could make up the final line up along with automatically re-elected Ceann Comhairle Sean Ó Fearghail.
